BETA: Microsoft rolls out new online service

Microsoft has now started taking what it calls ‘pre-registration’ signups for its new beta “Microsoft Office Live Workspace”, a new service touted as being a companion to Microsoft Office.

Whilst the idea of sharing your own files onto the internet for your own use isn’t a new idea – Google have been doing this allready for a while now with ‘Google Documents‘ and other web 2.0-ish sites allowing you to save your files online -I think it will be interesting to see how Microsoft handles this. The following is from their site:

“Share With Others

  • Invite people to your workspace
  • You control who can view, comment, and edit your documents
  • Stop manually merging versions from multiple people”

Maybe the service will be devided in two; your files, and a semi-public ‘Workspace’ area, for you to share with other people and work collaboratively. But the main question in my mind is:

Will it have a Web 2.0 enabled document editor? If so, is this a sign that the Microsoft Office suite of applications may be moving to the online world entirely, to prevent piracy?

Either way, you can sign up and be notified when the service goes live (Free), plus more info after the jump:
